(Norman Lendzion)

One of the coolest (and most aptly-named) events surrounding Art Basel Miami Beach this week is “It Ain’t Fair,” a multi-media art, music and film extravaganza located in Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran’s expansive O.H.W.O.W. alternative art space in the Wynwood section of town. With some of the art world’s hippest galleries on board, including Deitch Projects and Peres Projects, and hyper-connected curators like Tim Barber, Kathy Grayson, Nicola Vassell and the artist Terence Koh, it’s no wonder the exhibit-slash-temporary nightclub has been drawing some of the best crowds of the week. Name: Nina Ricci
File Under: Women’s Boutiques, Paris
Address: 39, Avenue Montaigne
Web site: Nina Ricci

What to Get: Even (maybe especially) in shaky times, a girl needs a bit of fantasy, and the new Nina Ricci boutique in Paris is filled with plenty of distractingly dreamy frippery. The restrainedly chic space serves as an ideal backdrop for the creative director Olivier Theyskens’s romantic rocker-chick clothing as well as the house’s classic scents.

What I Lust For: Any and all of Theyskens’s edgy but refined cocktail dresses. And it may be the end of the season, but I’m still gaga for two of his stunning gold gowns (looks 46 and 48 from Fall/Winter 2008). Couture detailing makes them seem sensibly priced … almost. Telephone Number: (631) 267-2400

What to Get: If you’re a fan of midcentury French design by the likes of Line Vautrin and Jacques Adnet, then Wayne Schwartz is your man. A former banker turned decorative-arts obsessive, his eye is sharp and his taste chic. His tiny Amagansett shop is uncluttered and focused, and I liked an alarming number of things. Besides furniture and accessories by Adnet and Vautrin, there are also stylish lamps (circa 1970) by Willy Daro and Marie-Claude de Fouquieres. Read the rest of this entry »

What To Get: I have a very guilty (some would say insane) pleasure, and it involves dropping parcels of pounds every time I visit Maria Grachvogel’s store on London’s Sloane Street. Grachvogel designs deliciously sexy cocktail dresses, evening gowns, blouses, sweaters and trousers that are cut beautifully and have a super-flattering fit. I like the fact that I probably won’t ever encounter someone else wearing the same frock at a party, since the line isn’t yet available Stateside. Read the rest of this entry »
