Invitation Only | Tom Cruise on The Moment
December 16, 2008

Tom Time — tune in here tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. (EST) to watch Mr. Cruise live. (Solve Sundsbo)
We’d love to have you over tomorrow night, when the Golden Globe Award-winning actor-producer and T Holiday poster boy Tom Cruise will reflect on a quarter century in show business, from his breakout adolescent sexcapade in “Risky Business” to his recent portrayal of a would-be Hitler assassin in the much anticipated “Valkyrie.” Unfortunately, our colleagues over at the TimesCenter tell us that the conversation with T’s editor at large, Lynn Hirschberg, is sold-out. But, thanks to the marvels of technology, if you tune in tomorrow starting at 6:30 p.m. (EST) you’ll be able to catch a live video feed of the tête-à-tête right here at The Moment. In the meantime, watch our latest exclusive Screen Test video to learn the secret to Cruise’s iconic dancing in skivvies (hint: it involves grease) — think of it as our preshow party favor.

The plastic will begin to break down in soil, water, compost or wherever microorganisms are present, and will fully degrade within five years.”
–Nina Lentini reports in MediaPost on Discover’s new biodegradable credit card, which the company says is the only one on the marketplace. We applaud any attempt to recycle, but is a card that disappears before its average user’s balance does such a good idea?

ABMB | Meet the Vogels
December 5, 2008
Megumi Sasaki’s documentary film “ Herb & Dorothy” debuts tonight at The Colony Theater in Miami as part of ABMB’s “Art Loves Film” series. The movie is a sweet tale about Herbert and Dorothy Vogel, a postal worker and a librarian, respectively, who amassed one of the most important contemporary art collections to date on a modest budget. (An excerpt from the film is above.) Here, The Moment caught up with Dorothy Vogel about the fluctuating art economy, dealer camaraderie, and advice for collecting in today’s market. Elaine Louie’s “Savoir Fare London.” (William P. O’Donnell/The New York Times)
Props are in order for one of the Times’ own, Elaine Louie, whose new guidebook, “Savoir Fare London: Stylish Dining for Under $25.00″ (The Little Book Room; $14.95) is out this week. Even with the pummeled pound, getting out of a restaurant in London that cheaply strikes me as depressing and possibly illegal. But Elaine (full disclosure: we’ve chatted in the elevator and I know her daughter, Anna Sussman, who writes for T Travel) has managed to sniff out a wide range of excellent, affordable, attractive places — Read the rest of this entry »

Maybe it’s a reflection of the current economic black cloud — with the construction of ubiquitous luxury buildings coming to a near inevitable halt — but what I can best describe as “construction-chic art” events are all the rage. During Frieze, White Cube threw an infamously wild party at an under-construction Georgian town house in Soho; now Joseph Cayre’s Midtown Miami development is the venue for an exhibition project taking place this week. Where else in the art world do business and pleasure mix as effortlessly as at Art Basel Miami Beach? We asked Mariko Munro, a fair regular and the associate director of 303 Gallery, to report from the trenches. Her play-by-play from yesterday’s activities are below. Read the rest of this entry »

“Night Ride,” by Nikki Katsikas
Although the crowds weren’t huge at GEISAI Miami during the V.I.P. vernissage on Tuesday night, the excitement was palpable for the 21 artists who were selected to show off their work. Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki studios served as the sponsor, while the panel of jurors included Matthew Higgs, the director and curator of White Columns in New York; Bonnie Clearwater, the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Shamim Momin, a curator at the Whitney Museum of Art; and Joao Ribas, the curator of the Drawing Center in New York. The artists were each given a free booth to exhibit their works during the festival; two standouts are shown here. Read the rest of this entry »
