The Day In the Life of a Basel Player
December 3, 2008
Where else in the art world do business and pleasure mix as effortlessly as at Art Basel Miami Beach? We asked Mariko Munro, a fair regular and the associate director of 303 Gallery, to report from the trenches. Her play-by-play from yesterday’s activities are below.
Where: NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance)
Spotted: The Karma International girls; the collectors Jaime Frankfurt, Cardif Dugen Loy, Matt Aberle and Arty Nelson.
Highlights: An amazing Henry Darger double-sided drawing at James Fuentes’s booth; admirable work from Lizzie Bougatsos, an artist and lead singer of the band Gang Gang Dance.
Where: Outside the New Museum’s pop-up store.
Spotted: The New Museum’s Lisa Phillips and Benjamin Godsill
Highlights: A few rounds of ping-pong set up by the Bueno Aires-born artist Rirkrit Tiravanija with the owner of 303 Gallery, Lisa Spellman.
Where: Anri Sala’s opening at Miami MOCA, hosted by International Vanity Fair
Spotted: Black Frame’s Brian Philips; the MOCA director Bonnie Clearwater; the usual mix of gallerists: Carol Greene [of Greene Naftali], Thaddeus Ropac, Shaun Regen, Nicholas Logsdail; the photographers David LaChapelle and Bruce Weber.
Highlights: I heard a rumor that Calvin Klein was there, creating the holy trinity of art, fashion and commerce.
Where: Joe’s Stone Crab for the Art in America dinner celebrating its redesign
Spotted: The interior decorator-about-town Rick Clifton; Beth de Woody; Curt Markus; Stephanie Seymour; Peter Brant; Malcolm McLaren; Lisa Spellman (who I was accompanying); Eva Presenhuber; Shaun Regan; Barbara Gladstone
Highlights: Ricky’s fantastic dinner table centerpieces filled with oranges and sticks.
Where: “The Station” opening, an exhibition curated by the artist Nate Lowman and the Whitney’s Shamim Momin.
Spotted: New York friends Teddy Liouliakis and Yvette Quiazon; Visionaire’s Cecilia Dean and Simon Casts; Jay Sanders from Green Naftali; Brendan Fowler; Terrence Koh; Rob Pruitt; Hanna Liden; Tom Burr; Mattais Faldbaken; Michelle O’Mara; Justin Lowe and Jonah Freeman; Rob Fischer; Sterling Ruby; Martin Opel; Matthew Higgs (the D.J.); Naomi Fischer; Oliver Payne; the art critic Jerry Saltz; the gallerists Nicky Verber and Asche from Herald St; James Fuentes; Kelly Taxter; Pascale Spengemann.
Highlights: Congratulating the artist-cum-curator Nate Lowman. Before we left, we ran into ArtForum’s David Velasco and Ryan Macnamara. Did I mention how wild Shamim Momin looked in her short tight magenta dress?

Highlights: “Top Chef” reruns
